Women Build

What is Women Build?

Women Build began in 1991 by a group of women in Charlotte, NC. and has grown into an international initiative of Habitat for Humanity that has resulted in the building of more than 5,700 new homes.

Through Habitat Forsyth, families earning a low-income gain access to a decent and affordable housing solution. Habitat volunteers get to build alongside the new homeowner, who is required to complete a minimum of 300 sweat equity hours before purchasing the house. Over 80% of our homeowners are single women, which makes this build event even more special to us.

The Women Build program is not about excluding men; it’s about including women and challenging them to help build affordable housing in our community by providing a female-friendly work site that empowers women to take leadership roles and learn new skills.

Join us for Women BuildSeptember 19, 2026 from 8:00AM – 3:00 PM to learn, share, and build together, and find out more about how you can help bring homeownership and affordable repairs to women in our community.

How Do I Get Involved?

Donate

Women Build is an important fundraiser for Habitat Forsyth. For this year’s event, our goal is to raise $100,000 to fund the construction of affordable homes and continue raising awareness about the critical need for affordable housing in our community. Every dollar goes into furthering Habitat’s mission of building community through housing. Join us in making a difference today!

FAQ

Are men allowed?
Yes, men are welcome. While Women Build is focused on the inclusion of women in the work of building homes, we do not exclude volunteers of any gender or gender identity, nor do we allow discrimination of any kind. We seek to recruit a diverse volunteer workforce for all of our home builds and engagements.
Is experience necessary?
No experience necessary. Volunteers work under the guidance of construction professionals, alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homeowners. Whether you are learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, this is a rewarding experience for all involved, and it improves the community that you share.
How does Habitat empower women?
Our goal is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence. At Habitat, we have the ability to provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and, when offered these tools, women can succeed in changing their communities.
Does Women Build work internationally?
Yes, even though ownership and property rights for women can be particularly challenging in some countries. Through Women Build, we can increase our advocacy efforts on these important issues, while collecting valuable information that demonstrates the many benefits of female ownership. We are also partnering with several nongovernmental organizations to assist in teaching women how to use their voice. Learn more about our international work.
