A New Start
To Deana Newby, becoming a homeowner in the new Habitat neighborhood of Stone Terrace will be a welcome change from years of renting in various neighborhoods. “Rent is going up every year, but there are not any upgrades being made. We still have to wait on landlords coming to fix things. Now I won’t be in a neighborhood where I am always having to watch out for my kids. I may actually be able to let them stay outside an hour or two without worrying.”
Room for Everyone
Having a home for the long term will break her family’s generational cycle of renting, Deana said. The Habitat program prepares new homeowners well, she added. “We have learned about saving, about making productive sacrifices in order to save, and we’re even journaling a little bit.”
She and her four children are excited about their new home. Deana, who works in manufacturing, will live there with three of the four kids, who are thrilled they will each have their own room.
Moving forward
“I am thankful for the Habitat program, because everyone does not have the luxury of being able to buy a house the traditional way, with the high down payments and all the requirements,” Deana said. “I wanted to have something to call my own, to own a house I can pass down, that will be a place my kids can always come home to. They will never have to worry about being homeless.”
Career Center Build
Deana’s home was actually started by construction program students on the campus of the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools’ Career Center.
Students from the carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and masonry programs all contributed to build the flooring system, walls, roof, and wiring rough-ins. When complete, the home was taken by truck to its new foundation on a lot in the Stone Terrace neighborhood, where Habitat volunteers finished the build.
Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County would like to thank our donors for this home, including Wells Fargo, The United Methodist Churches of the Yadkin Valley District, Twin City Development Foundation, and the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools.
